Network Error When Connecting to Internet or On-Line Service with Windows 95

Here is the solution to a network error that can occur on Windows 95 when connecting to an Internet service provider or another on-line service.

Problem Description

The problem only occurs when you have a persistent drive mapping (that is, a drive mapping which is reconnected automatically when you start Windows 95).

The problem is that whenever you connect to your Internet service provider, or other on-line service (such as Compuserve), you get an error message similar to the following:

Windows Networking
The following error occurred while reconnecting

     F: to \\SERVER\C

More data is available

Do you want to restore this connection the next time you log on (Yes or No)?

Solution

The problem is caused by an incorrect configuration of the dial-up networking connection. To correct the configuration, do the following:

  1. Open My Computer.

  2. Double-click on Dial-Up Networking.

  3. Right-click on the connection that you use to connect with your Internet service provider or other on-line service.

  4. Click Properties.

  5. Click Server Types.

  6. Remove the check from the box labeled "Log on to network".

  7. Click OK to exit from the properties box.
