Windows 98 Beta

This page records our observations and experiences using Invisible LAN with the Windows 98 Betas, from September 1997 through June 1998. The network was fairly stable throughout the beta process, and we only needed to make relatively modest changes to the Invisible LAN software in order to support Windows 98.

Upgrading from Windows 95 to Windows 98 Beta 2 (09/28/97)

We were able to upgrade an existing Windows 95 machine to Windows 98 Beta 2, with the network installed and running. The network configuration was preserved through the upgrade.

There were just two minor problems. First, Windows 98 Setup reboots the system several times during the upgrade process. During some of these reboots, there were various error messages from the Invisible LAN software. You can ignore these error messages; they go away when the upgrade is complete.

Second, Windows 98 Setup created a binding between our TransBIOS protocol and Microsoft's Dial-Up Adapter. This binding has to be removed manually after the upgrade is complete. To remove the binding:

  1. Right-click "Network Neighborhood", then click "Properties".
  2. Click "Dial-Up Adpater", then click "Properties".
  3. Click "Bindings".
  4. Remove the check from the box labeled "TransBIOS".
  5. Click "OK", then click "OK" again.

By the way, software versions 4.00F and later display a warning message on-screen if there is a binding between TransBIOS and the Dial-Up adapter (earlier versions didn't display a warning). You should install the current software version before upgrading to Windows 98. You can download the current software version from our Software Products section.

Upgrading from Windows 98 Beta 2 to Windows 98 Beta 2.1 (12/01/97)

We have just upgraded our Windows 98 machine from Beta 2 to Beta 2.1, with the network installed and running. The network configuration was preserved through the upgrade.

There was just one minor problem. Windows 98 Setup reboots the system twice during the upgrade process. During the first of these reboots, there were various error messages from the Invisible LAN software. You can ignore these error messages; they go away when the upgrade is complete.

After the upgrade, the network was working properly, with no need for any manual tweaking of the configuration. There were no additional changes required in the Invisible LAN software to support Windows 98 Beta 2.1.

Upgrading from Windows 98 Beta 2.1 to Windows 98 Beta 3 (02/01/98)

We have just upgraded our Windows 98 machine from Beta 2.1 to Beta 3, with the network installed and running. The network configuration was preserved through the upgrade.

There were two minor problems. First, Windows 98 Setup reboots the system three times during the upgrade process. During the first two of these reboots, there were various error messages from the Invisible LAN software. You can ignore these error messages; they go away when the upgrade is complete.

Second, we found that File menu in Explorer and Network Neighborhood was not displayed properly when an Invisible LAN server was selected. To correct this problem, we have released a new version of the Invisible LAN software. You can find this new version in our Software Products section.

With the new software version installed, the network was working properly after the upgrade, with no need for any manual tweaking of the configuration.

Upgrading from Windows 98 Beta 3 to Windows 98 Release Candidate 0 (04/17/98)

We have just upgraded our Windows 98 machine from Beta 3 to Release Candidate 0, with the network installed and running.

Second, Windows 98 Setup displayed a message warning that it had detected antivirus software on our system, even though we didn't have any antivirus software. It is unclear if this message is related to Invisible LAN. In any case, if you don't have antivirus software, you can safely ignore the message.

After the upgrade, the network was working properly, with no need for any manual tweaking of the configuration. There were no additional changes required in the Invisible LAN software to support Windows 98 Release Candidate 0.

Upgrading from Windows 98 Release Candidate 0 to Windows 98 Retail (06/26/98)

We have just upgraded our Windows 98 machine from Release Candidate 0 to the final retail release of Windows 98, with the network installed and running. The network configuration was preserved through the upgrade.

There was one minor problem.

There were no additional changes required in the Invisible LAN software to support Windows 98.
